DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The World Health Organization reports that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be contained within three months, provided sufficient resources are allocated. As of August 16, official data indicated 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities. The epidemic has now affected six provinces and 55 health zones, with a case fatality rate of approximately 47%. This makes it the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country.

Thierno Baldé, the WHO incident manager, emphasized that the timeline for containment hinges on maintaining adequate staffing, supplies, and operational support. The response efforts have garnered around $69.3 million of the $115 million needed. Over a two-week span, health teams added more than 400 treatment beds, deployed 100 additional epidemiologists, and mobilized over 500 community health workers. These teams are crucial in surveillance, contact tracing, case detection, and referrals. The effort also depends on ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel working throughout affected regions.

Transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, marking it as the sixth province impacted by the outbreak. In mid-August, Ituri remained the primary transmission hub, accounting for the majority of confirmed cases and fatalities. Officials noted that many recent infections had no apparent link to known patients, increasing the urgency for faster case identification and contact monitoring. Surveillance efforts have been expanded to detect infections sooner and facilitate quick transfer of patients to treatment facilities.

Response efforts broadened across affected regions

The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare of the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses responsible for Ebola disease. Since the first identification of Ebola in 1976, the country has experienced 17 outbreaks. Additionally, Uganda has reported cases linked to the broader epidemic, with 20 confirmed infections and two deaths. No new cases have been reported there since June 21.

Currently, there is no licensed vaccine or approved specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical management primarily focuses on early diagnosis, supportive care, infection prevention, and swift contact tracing. Efforts also include safe burials and community outreach initiatives to curb further spread. Local personnel assist in identifying suspected cases and guiding patients to treatment centers. Authorities have provided hygiene supplies and trained community workers in affected areas. Early supportive care remains vital for patients showing Ebola symptoms.

Surveillance and funding continue to be central in efforts to contain the outbreak. Although contact monitoring improved during August, some affected areas still fell short of public health targets. By August 12, teams were tracking 17,460 of 20,740 contacts, approximately 84%. Additional epidemiologists have joined to improve detection speed and reduce delays between symptom onset and treatment. Community health workers report suspected cases and facilitate patient referrals. Medical personnel have been at significant risk, with over 150 infections among health workers recorded by early August.

On May 17, the outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Ongoing activities include laboratory testing, clinical care, surveillance, safe burials, and community engagement, supported by both national authorities and international partners. The latest weekly reports showed an increase in confirmed cases and deaths compared to previous weeks. Baldé highlighted that the three-month containment goal depends heavily on securing the necessary resources to sustain these efforts. Meanwhile, health teams continue working in regions affected by insecurity and disruptions to medical services.
