UN Approves New Resolution to Address Map Distortion and Promote Equal Earth Projection

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly passed an international resolution advocating for more precise and balanced portrayals of continental landmasses on global maps. In a recorded vote that garnered backing from 107 member states, the assembly tackled cartographic distortions that tend to significantly diminish the perceived size of Africa and other equatorial regions across the Global South. UN adopts resolution to correct world map representation as diplomatic delegations take formal action to resolve historical biases embedded within traditional cartographic standards.

United Nations General Assembly hall delegates convene during formal international voting sessions.

The resolution specifically targets the commonly used Mercator map projection, which was created in the 16th century by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator for maritime navigation. While useful for sea travel, the mathematical design of the Mercator projection gradually enlarges landmasses farther from the equator while compressing those nearer to it. As detailed in documentation published by the United Nations General Assembly, these distortions continue to influence contemporary educational textbooks, news reports, digital maps, and official government publications around the world.

Delegates at the assembly recognized that the effects of cartographic distortion extend beyond technical issues into broader socioeconomic and cultural realms. The assembly pointed out that inaccuracies in visual scaling can shape public perceptions of the economic, political, and cultural importance of entire continents. The UN resolution endorses alternative projections, such as the Equal Earth map introduced in 2018, which accurately depicts continental sizes in their true proportions.

UN Resolution Aims to Correct Map Representation Bias

The decision follows an initiative led by a coalition of African countries, supported by the African Union, which submitted the draft resolution in August. Supporters highlighted that traditional world maps often depict landmasses such as Greenland as comparable in size to Africa, despite Africa being physically fourteen times larger. Reports from the Emirates News Agency emphasized that addressing these historical visual disparities is a crucial step toward establishing fair geographic education worldwide.

Under the terms of the resolution, specialized international organizations are instructed to coordinate technical mapping standards. The assembly urged the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the United Nations Development Programme to collaborate with academic and geospatial experts to develop updated cartographic guidelines. These efforts aim to assist member states and digital mapping providers in adopting equal-area projection frameworks across various platforms.

UN Education Agencies Assigned to Create Precise Mapping Standards

While promoting voluntary adoption of equal-area projections, the resolution is non-binding and does not prohibit the use of the traditional Mercator map or require private tech companies to modify proprietary software. Instead, it encourages member nations to incorporate essential cartographic principles into primary and secondary educational curricula. Educational authorities are urged to increase awareness among students, scientific organizations, and publishers about the perceptual biases caused by different map projections.

Monitoring of the UN resolution’s implementation will be carried out by international cartographic associations and geospatial policy groups, as educational institutions review textbook standards. Updates to digital mapping standards are expected to be discussed at upcoming global geospatial summits. Official records of the assembly’s vote and technical projection specifications are available through UN registry portals.
