TOKYO, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – On Monday, eastern Japan faced severe weather conditions as Typhoon Dujuan swept through the area with heavy rain and powerful winds, leading to emergency landslide alerts and widespread disruptions in transportation. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its most severe landslide warning for Oshima in the Izu Islands shortly after midday. Some parts of the island chain experienced rainfall exceeding 500 millimeters, while Chiba Prefecture recorded more than 300 millimeters from Saturday to early Monday afternoon. Officials cautioned residents about potential flooding, swollen rivers, landslides, and hazardous coastal conditions.

At noon, Dujuan was moving north-northeast over waters west of Hachijojima, maintaining a broad storm-force wind zone. Forecasters tracked the storm’s course toward the Izu Islands and the Kanto region, with expectations that the typhoon would pass near Kanto later Monday as it accelerated northeastward. Weather authorities issued warnings for violent winds, turbulent seas, and additional heavy rain along eastern Pacific coastal areas. They also monitored the development of linear rain bands, which can cause intense, localized downpours over short periods.

The storm has caused damage and led to closures across multiple prefectures. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism reported three landslides in Chiba by 2 p.m., with one home destroyed and another partially damaged. Additionally, two landslides were recorded in Miyazaki, which resulted in one death and one injury. Heavy rainfall prompted the closure of 32 sections across six expressways and three national roads. Flooding and fallen trees also caused the shutdown of 16 prefectural road segments in Ibaraki, Saitama, and Chiba.

Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Flights and Public Transportation

By 11 a.m., the ministry’s update reported the cancellation of 384 flights scheduled for Monday, primarily affecting airports serving the Kanto region. At that time, airport authorities had not reported any infrastructure damage preventing operations. The typhoon also impacted a major public event in Chiba, as organizers canceled the final day of the Tokyo Game Show due to weather and transportation concerns. Travelers faced schedule adjustments as service providers responded to worsening conditions.

Rail and maritime services also experienced notable disruptions. By 1:45 p.m., eight railway operators suspended service on 16 conventional lines, with another operator planning to suspend 12 additional routes. No Shinkansen suspensions had been reported at that point. Maritime routes were halted on 36 lines, mainly in Kanto and Kyushu, while highway bus companies suspended 62 routes, mostly in Chiba and Nagano. Local bus services also stopped 26 routes, although some services continued with partial suspensions.

Flood Control Measures Intensify as Typhoon Moves Northeast

As rainfall increased across river basins near the typhoon’s path, authorities expanded flood control efforts. Thirteen dams reached levels prompting pre-release actions, and three began releasing water in advance. Nine dams carried out flood-control operations, with two still active at noon. No reports of river flooding had been received by midday. Emergency teams dispatched pumping and lighting vehicles to Chiba to assist with drainage and overnight response efforts. Local governments maintained ongoing monitoring of rivers, slopes, and low-lying areas.

Weather officials forecast additional heavy rain across Tokai, Kanto-Koshin, the Izu Islands, and Tohoku through Monday. Rain totals through noon Tuesday could reach 250 millimeters in Kanto, Tokai, and the Izu Islands, while Tohoku might receive up to 150 millimeters during the same period. Authorities urged residents to stay alert for landslides, flooding, rising rivers, strong winds, and high waves. As Typhoon Dujuan advances northeastward over waters near eastern Japan, warnings and evacuation notices continue to be updated accordingly.
