KINSHASA, DR CONGO / RankWire.AI / – In DR Congo, the Ebola crisis has escalated into the nation’s most extensive epidemic to date. By July 30, authorities had verified 3,605 cases, which included 1,587 fatalities. The case fatality rate stood at 44%. During the most recent complete reporting week, teams documented 567 new infections and 296 deaths, marking the highest weekly figures since the outbreak’s inception and indicating ongoing virus proliferation.
Currently, the outbreak spans 49 health zones across five provinces, namely Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo. During the recent seven-day period, active transmission was reported in 33 zones, which accounted for 641 cases and 282 deaths. Ituri remains the epicenter, with 3,176 infections, representing 88% of the country’s total. Bunia recorded the highest local case count, followed by Rwampara, Mongbwalu, Nizi, Lita, and Nyankunde.
The World Health Organization classifies the threat level within DR Congo as very high. It also perceives the danger as significant for Uganda and neighboring nations. Conversely, the risk for the broader African continent and globally is deemed low. Ongoing armed conflict, displacement, and frequent population movements continue to hinder efforts to control the disease. Healthcare teams are also challenged by damaged infrastructure, staffing shortages, and restricted access to many affected communities.
Health responders bolster contact tracing and patient care efforts
In the five impacted provinces, DR Congo’s health officials identified a total of 17,863 contacts. Response teams actively monitored 13,455 individuals, leaving thousands untracked. The outbreak has infected 151 healthcare workers and resulted in 44 deaths, while another 68 have recovered. Authorities continue to expand testing capabilities, improve patient treatment, implement infection prevention measures, and engage communities. They also facilitate safe burials, transportation services, supply deliveries, and public awareness initiatives in regions with ongoing transmission.
Bundibugyo Ebola transmits through direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, organs, or contaminated objects. Symptoms may manifest between two and 21 days after exposure. Patients are not contagious prior to showing symptoms. Early indicators include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, and sore throat. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain. Rapid testing, patient isolation, supportive care, contact tracing, and safe burial practices are essential strategies for limiting further spread.
Border surveillance remains vigilant
Designated as a public health emergency on May 17, the outbreak prompted the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to declare a continental crisis the following day. Uganda ceased its local transmission on July 28 after 42 days without new cases but maintains heightened surveillance due to regular cross-border movement with eastern DR Congo. Screening measures, laboratory preparedness, and readiness activities persist in border regions linked to affected communities.
By July 30, authorities across all affected countries confirmed 3,626 cases and 1,589 deaths. DR Congo accounted for 3,605 cases, Uganda for 20, and France reported one. A total of at least 651 patients recovered in DR Congo, with 18 recoveries in Uganda. Two patients diagnosed in DR Congo received treatment in Germany. The majority of infections and fatalities remain concentrated in eastern DR Congo, where ongoing surveillance, treatment, and community response efforts continue to fight the outbreak.
