KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Ebola outbreak has reached unprecedented levels, with the latest figures indicating 4,945 confirmed cases and 2,325 deaths as of Aug. 16, according to Ebola statistics. Over the past 24 hours, authorities confirmed an additional 101 infections. This death toll surpasses the 2,299 fatalities reported during the Ebola epidemic from 2018 to 2020 within the country.

Since the outbreak was declared in May, it has continued to extend throughout eastern DRC. United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher noted that Ebola was claiming approximately one life every 30 minutes. The number of cases had already exceeded the total from the 2018-2020 outbreak prior to this latest update. Health officials have documented infections across 54 health zones in six provinces, with Ituri remaining the primary hub of transmission, accounting for most confirmed cases.
The current outbreak was officially announced on May 15 following laboratory confirmation of Bundibugyo virus disease. This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak recorded in the DRC since the virus was first identified in 1976. On May 17, the World Health Organization classified the situation as a public health emergency of international concern. No licensed vaccine or specific approved treatment exists for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical teams rely on supportive care, isolation, testing, contact tracing, and infection prevention measures to combat the virus.
Ebola Spreads Across Six Provinces in DRC
The outbreak has now impacted Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé provinces. Bas-Uélé became the sixth affected area after officials confirmed a case in the Buta health zone; the patient had traveled from Haut-Uélé prior to symptom development. By August 12, health authorities had documented 965 recoveries nationwide. In addition, response teams are tracking thousands of contacts of confirmed cases to identify new transmission chains and prevent further spread.
Medical personnel have faced direct risks, with confirmed infections among health workers reaching at least 155 by Aug. 9, including 45 fatalities. Security issues and population displacement have hindered medical efforts in several affected zones. Attacks on health facilities have disrupted surveillance and treatment activities in eastern DRC. The World Health Organization continues to support testing, infection control, case management, and response strategies alongside national health agencies.
Escalating Response as Ebola Death Toll Outstrips Previous Records
Health officials have expanded laboratory testing, surveillance, and treatment capacities across impacted provinces. Efforts include contact tracing, management of confirmed cases, and the execution of safe burial procedures. Community engagement remains integral to the response in areas with ongoing transmission. Meanwhile, researchers are investigating experimental vaccines and treatments for Bundibugyo virus disease. Since July, a clinical trial involving potential therapies has enrolled confirmed patients in Ituri, although these products are not yet approved for routine use against the virus.
Confirmed cases outside the DRC include 20 cases and two deaths in Uganda before the last patient was discharged in July. France reported a single imported case without secondary transmission documented. Currently, the DRC outbreak ranks second globally in Ebola-related deaths, trailing only the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, which caused 11,310 fatalities and 28,616 cases across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, according to historic outbreak data.
