New research suggests psyllium may enhance blood sugar regulation in adults

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – In a recent review conducted in 2024, scientists found that regular intake of psyllium husk could support better blood glucose management as part of a balanced diet. Derived from the Plantago ovata plant, this fiber absorbs water within the digestive tract, forming a gel that slows down digestion and carbohydrate absorption. Clinical evidence has associated this process with smaller post-meal glucose spikes. Additionally, some studies indicate improvements in fasting blood sugar and HbA1c levels among individuals with impaired glucose control or type 2 diabetes.

Psyllium intake may improve glucose control in adults
Clinical research links psyllium with lower fasting glucose and improved HbA1c markers.

The systematic review and meta-analysis analyzed 19 randomized controlled trials involving a total of 962 adults. Researchers, including experts from Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, compared the effects of psyllium supplementation against placebo or control interventions. Results showed that fasting blood sugar levels decreased by an average of 6.89 mg/dL. Across the pooled studies, HbA1c levels fell by 0.75 percentage points. The analysis also noted an improvement in HOMA-IR, an indicator of insulin resistance, though there was no statistically significant change in circulating insulin levels.

Findings further suggest that both dosage and duration influence outcomes. Improvements in fasting blood sugar were observed across various psyllium doses. However, studies lasting less than 50 days did not demonstrate a significant reduction in fasting glucose in subgroup analysis. HbA1c levels did not show notable improvement at doses below 10 grams daily. A tablespoon of psyllium may approximate that amount, but product weights can vary. Consumers should verify nutrition labels rather than assuming uniform dosing in every tablespoon.

Enhanced benefits are more evident with higher blood sugar levels

Previous clinical research indicated more pronounced effects among individuals already struggling to control blood glucose. A meta-analysis of 35 randomized trials revealed the greatest reductions in participants with type 2 diabetes. In these studies, taking psyllium before meals lowered fasting glucose by an average of 37 mg/dL, with HbA1c decreasing by 0.97 percentage points. Conversely, those with normal blood sugar experienced minimal glucose-lowering benefits. Participants with prediabetes showed smaller improvements compared to individuals with diabetes.

An additional trial involving 40 adults with type 2 diabetes over eight weeks reported that daily consumption of approximately 10.5 grams of soluble psyllium fiber led to improvements in fasting glucose, HbA1c, insulin, and insulin resistance. Although the sample size was limited, larger pooled studies provide stronger evidence. Current data supports the idea that psyllium could serve as a supplementary dietary option for managing diabetes, but it should not replace prescribed medications or professional medical advice.

Proper hydration is essential for safe use

Since psyllium absorbs significant amounts of water, correct preparation is crucial. The U.S. National Library of Medicine recommends mixing psyllium powder or granules with at least 8 ounces, or roughly 240 milliliters, of liquid. The mixture should be consumed promptly after mixing. Increasing fiber intake too quickly may cause gas, bloating, or other digestive issues. Insufficient fluid intake can also lead to swallowing difficulties or increase the risk of intestinal blockage in vulnerable individuals.

Psyllium can influence how the body absorbs or reacts to certain medications. Individuals on prescription treatments should consult with a healthcare provider or pharmacist before incorporating regular psyllium supplementation. This advice is especially important for those taking medicines to regulate blood sugar. While psyllium may assist with glucose management, it is not a substitute for diabetes medications, ongoing monitoring, or professional healthcare. Maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and consistent medical follow-up remain vital for long-term blood sugar control.
